Norwich Highlights: Culture and Heritage with a Local Broadcaster

Norwich is a charming medieval city with a thriving arts and cultural scene. On this walking tour, broadcaster and podcaster Nicki Bannerman will show you some of the city’s most significant landmarks and share stories of her favourite artistic and cultural highlights. The tour begins at the Edith Cavell Memorial with the brave story of the British nurse who heroically freed 200 allied soldiers in Belgium. You’ll visit the medieval Norwich Castle, the elegant Royal Arcade with its Art Nouveau splendor, and wander through vibrant Norwich Market with its distinctive striped roofs, continuing a trading tradition that dates back 900 years. At the South Asia Collection, you’ll see a museum housed in a former Victorian skating rink, which features extraordinary artefacts from India, Pakistan, and Southeast Asia. The tour concludes at the Maddermarket Theatre, originally an 18th-century chapel that became an Elizabethan-style playhouse in 1921, named after the medieval market where madder plants used for red dye were sold. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to: • Marvel at the Forum, a striking glass and zinc-fronted contemporary landmark housing the Millennium Library, which (partially) survived a tragic 1994 fire • Admire the medieval carvings on St. Ethelbert’s Gate and Erpingham Gate, the grand portals which stand guard at Norwich Cathedral • Explore Elm Hill, one of England’s most complete medieval streets, where Tudor buildings have survived since 1507 and are featured in Hollywood films • Visit the Maids Head Hotel, Britain’s oldest hotel with 800 years of history, where Queen Catherine of Aragon and Cardinal Wolsey once stayed • Visit the Georgian Theatre Royal, one of England’s oldest theatres operating since 1758 • Find out how Norwich City Football Club became known as the Canaries • Pass the Assembly House, designed in 1754, which hosted celebrations for Nelson’s Trafalgar victory By the end of this fascinating 75-minute walk with a local broadcaster and journalist, you’ll have discovered why the East Anglian gem is a centre of creativity and commerce. There are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy local food, café culture, shopping and refreshments along the way.
