Layers of Lausanne: A Guide to Switzerland’s City of Three Hills

Once the site of a Roman military fort called Lausanna and now part of Switzerland for over two centuries, Lausanne is often called the world’s best small city. On this walking tour, you’ll explore the history and culture of this dynamic Swiss city nestled on the shores of Lake Geneva. The tour starts at the Neo-Renaissance Palais de Rumine, where I’ll tell you about its fascinating origins as a gift to the city and its historical significance as the site where the Treaty of Lausanne was signed in 1923. You’ll go on to climb the 70 stairs to Lausanne Cathedral with its magnificent Gothic architecture and impressive 13th-century rose window containing 105 medallions depicting the medieval worldview. You’ll pass the Fountain of Justice in the Place de la Palud, crowned by a blindfolded statue symbolizing fairness and impartiality. Before making your way to the Palace of Justice, you’ll discover why the Swiss Federal Supreme Court is located in Lausanne rather than the capital, Bern. The tour ends at the Esplanade de Montbenon with its spectacular lake views. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to: • Learn about the Treaty of Lausanne, signed at Palais de Rumine, which finalized the break-up of the Ottoman Empire after WWI • Discover the Night Watchman tradition unique to Lausanne, the only Swiss city where someone still calls out the time from the cathedral belfry from 10 pm to 2 am • Savor the opportunity to sample artisanal Swiss chocolate at Durig Chocolate • Witness the transformation of the Flon district from an industrial area with unpleasant smells to one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods • Uncover the legendary story of William Tell, the famous archer considered the father of the Swiss Confederacy, at his commemorative statue On this 40-minute tour, you’ll discover Lausanne’s story through its squares, palaces, monuments, cafes, fountains, and churches.
