HISTORY ASPECTS:The Vought F4U-1 Corsair known as "Daphne C" was the aircraft of 2nd Lt. James N. Cupp a 12-victory ace of Marine Fighter Squadron 213 (VMF-213) nicknamed the "Hell Hawks." During July 1943 VMF-213 was stationed on Guadalcanal a critical Allied stronghold in the Solomon Islands campaign. The Corsair with its distinctive inverted gull wings and powerful R-2800 Double Wasp engine provided the Marines with an edge in the Pacific Theater excelling in dogfights and ground-attack missions.2nd Lt. James Cupp emerged as one of the squadron’s most skilled and aggressive pilots. Flying "Daphne C" named after a personal connection Cupp participated in numerous air engagements against Japanese forces.
