Old Jaffa’s long and twisted tale is filled with familiar characters: Alexander the Great, the Crusaders, and even Napoleon. The city’s collection of artists’ quarters and urban parks overlooking the Mediterranean Sea make it a unique area to explore and enjoy. On this walking tour, you’ll hear the stories behind its beautifully restored and preserved buildings. Starting near the Jaffa Clock Tower, you’ll follow in the footsteps of a few historic characters who spent time here. As you walk between the gardens of Old Jaffa, I’ll tell you about the city’s long history, and how archaeological findings from the times of the pharaohs were discovered in these gardens. As you take in the main sites and weave through the Artists’ Quarter, I’ll peel back the area’s layers of history and share how my family, the Chelouche family, helped modernise Jaffa. I’ll show you Andromeda’s Rocks and share the legends that surround it. You’ll also be able to make a wish on top of the Wishing Bridge before heading to the highest point in Old Jaffa. On this hour-long tour, you’ll have a chance to: • Take in stunning vistas of the Mediterranean Sea and Tel Aviv’s coastline • Hear snippets of stories from Greek Mythology and the Old Testament which took place in Jaffa • Decipher the symbols on St Peter’s Church • Meander through the alleyways, galleries and workshops that populate the Artists’ Quarter • See the suspended orange tree that keeps on living and growing, despite being uprooted • Feel the special vibe of Jaffa’s Flea Market area By the end of this almost circular route, you’ll have a deeper appreciation for this port city’s history.
