HISTORY ASPECTS:The North American P-51B Mustang "Ole-II" flown by 1st Lt. William Hovde of the 358th Fighter Squadron 355th Fighter Group earned its place in history during World War II as a key component of the Allied air offensive over Europe. Based at RAF Steeple Morden the 355th Fighter Group nicknamed the "Steeple Morden Strafers" was tasked with long-range bomber escort missions ground attack and strafing operations deep in enemy territory. As one of the early adopters of the P-51 Mustang the 358th Fighter Squadron quickly demonstrated the aircraft’s superior capabilities. With its Packard V-1650 Merlin engine the P-51B Mustang provided the range speed and firepower needed to escort bombers to strategic targets such as Berlin significantly reducing losses from enemy fighters.1st Lt.
