HISTORY ASPECTS:The North American P-51B Mustang "Ding Hao!" was famously flown by Major James Howard the commander of the 356th Fighter Squadron 354th Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. Major Howard became one of the most celebrated pilots of the war due to his extraordinary bravery and skill in aerial combat. The P-51 Mustang introduced as a long-range escort fighter revolutionized air combat with its combination of speed maneuverability and extended range providing critical support to Allied bombing missions deep into enemy territory.On January 11 1944 while flying "Ding Hao!" over Germany Major Howard performed a feat of heroism that earned him the Medal of Honor. During an escort mission to protect a formation of B-17 Flying Fortresses the bomber group came under heavy attack from a large number of Luftwaffe fighters.
