F8F Rare Bear 2020mm (80") Wingspan - ARF from Nexa - NXA1066-001
The discovery of Rare Bear, or the revamped Bearcat, was the result of Lyle Shelton's determination in 1969. Previously a wreckage found in Indiana, Rare Bear was once a victim of a failed throttle-on torque roll in 1962. Through relentless searching, Shelton acquired a stripped-down fuselage, wing center section, landing gear, and a right wing panel. With admirable efforts, the pieces were transported and restoration began in Orange County. Notably, the rebuild entailed upgrading to a more potent Wright R-3350 engine from a Douglas Skyraider, and utilizing a Douglas DC-7 propeller and cowl. Further support came from borrowing landing gear fairings and doors from another damaged Bearcat, and obtaining a rudder from Gunter Balz. The finishing touches, such as the windshield and canopy, were graciously provided by Edward T. Maloney. The first flight after the rebuild occurred on September 13, 1969.
