In Japan, it is said that one “listens” to the scent, which calms the body, mind and soul. In the Kōdō ritual, guests are arranged around the master of ceremonies and the braziers, in which a small piece of fragrant wood or a resin slowly burns on incandescent charcoal. They are passed from hand to hand, and each person concentrates in silence on the delicate aroma of the plumes of smoke and is invited, from time to time, to write, on the same sheet of paper, the emotions, the thoughts that “listening” to the emanations evokes.
