HISTORY ASPECTS:The Bristol 192 Belvedere was a British twin-engine tandem rotor helicopter designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Entering service in the early 1960s it was the Royal Air Force’s first twin-rotor helicopter. The Belvedere was initially developed for the Royal Navy as a transport and anti-submarine platform but its role shifted to tactical transport after a decision was made to equip the RAF instead. The helicopter had the capability to carry up to 19 fully equipped troops or a variety of cargo loads including artillery pieces and vehicles making it a versatile asset for military operations.The Belvedere saw combat during the Indonesian Confrontation in the mid-1960s where it was used by British forces for troop transport supply runs and casualty evacuation in the challenging terrain of Borneo. Its ability to operate in dense jungle environments and perform heavy-lift missions underlined its importance in the conflict.
