HISTORY ASPECTS:The Gloster Gladiator Britains last biplane fighter was introduced into service with the Royal Air Force in the mid-1930s embodying the transition from biplane to monoplane fighters. In 1937 No. 72 Squadron at RAF Church Fenton received its complement of Gladiators marking a significant step forward in fighter capability for the squadron. The Gladiator with its enclosed cockpit and four .303 Browning machine guns represented the cutting edge of aviation technology at the time providing the RAF with an agile and capable aircraft well-suited to the defense of British skies.No. 72 Squadron operated the Gloster Gladiator in the years leading up to World War II during which time the aircraft participated in various exercises and training operations aimed at refining the tactics and skills necessary for air combat. While the Gladiators service with 72 Squadron was relatively brief due to rapid advancements in aircraft technology it played a critical role in the development of RAF fighter strategy and training.
