HISTORY ASPECTS:The Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) Ausf. A was the first production variant of the iconic German assault gun developed in response to the Wehrmachts need for a mobile armored support vehicle capable of providing direct artillery fire for infantry units. Introduced in 1940 the StuG III Ausf. A was equipped with a short-barreled 7.5 cm StuK 37 L/24 gun primarily designed to take out fortified enemy positions and bunkers. Built on the chassis of the Panzer III tank the StuG III retained good mobility and was lightly armored reflecting its intended role in infantry support rather than direct tank combat.The StuG III Ausf. A saw its first major combat during the Battle of France in May-June 1940. As German forces advanced through Belgium and northern France in their blitzkrieg assault the StuG III proved highly effective in supporting infantry attacks against heavily fortified positions.
