HISTORY ASPECTS:The TBD-1 Devastator was a torpedo bomber that played a pivotal role in the early stages of World War II particularly during the Battle of Coral Sea in May 1942. One of the most notable aircraft from this battle was "White T-1" piloted by Lieutenant Commander James Brett of Torpedo Squadron 2 (VT-2) operating from the USS Lexington. The Battle of Coral Sea marked the first significant naval engagement where aircraft carriers were the principal combatants and the TBD-1 was a crucial asset in this new era of naval warfare.During the Battle of Coral Sea which occurred from May 4 to May 8 the U.S. Navy aimed to intercept an advancing Japanese fleet that was threatening to capture Port Moresby in New Guinea. On May 8 VT-2 launched its TBD-1 Devastators including "White T-1" on a strike against the Japanese aircraft carrier Sh???h???. Although the Devastators faced considerable challenges due to their slower speed and vulnerability to enemy fighters Brett and his squadron bravely pressed forward with their attack.
