His early passion for racing was sparked at the age of seven when he attended the 1948 Grand Prix at Silverstone, and from that moment, motorsport became a central theme in his life. Initially, he balanced his career in the Metropolitan Police with his love for racing, which eventually led to the founding of Chamberlain Engineering in the 1970s.Hugh's early success came through Clubmen’s Formula, where Chamberlain Engineering won nine championships between 1980 and 1985. He made a name in international racing with ventures into the World Sports Car Championship, managing teams in the Group C2 category and ultimately winning the championship in 1989. His cars frequently competed at the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours, with 25 entries under his management. Later, he turned to GT racing, collaborating with manufacturers like Lotus, Jaguar, and Chrysler, and achieving victories in the British GT Championship, Le Mans Series, and even the Le Mans 24 Hours.Hugh was known not only for his technical expertise but also for his genuine camaraderie and humour, making his teams a favourite in the paddock. His lasting impact on motorsport is evident through the many successful drivers he worked with, including motorsport legends such as Nigel Mansell, Derek Bell, and Michael Schumacher.To honour Hugh Chamberlain’s legacy, this special initiative will raise funds to support causes close to his heart.
