HISTORY ASPECTS:The Firefly VC a British variant of the American Sherman tank emerged as a critical asset during World War II particularly noted for its role in the Normandy campaign of 1944. Developed in response to the need for a tank capable of effectively countering the formidable German Panthers and Tigers the Firefly was equipped with the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun. This gun gave the Firefly the ability to penetrate the heavy armor of German tanks a capability that standard Shermans lacked.In the Normandy campaign which began with the D-Day landings on June 6 1944 the Firefly VC proved indispensable. The 1st Armoured Division among other British and Commonwealth units utilized the Firefly to great effect during the push inland from the beaches.
