HISTORY ASPECTS:The Boulton Paul Defiant NF operated by No. 151 Squadron of the Royal Air Force at RAF Wittering in 1941 played a unique and significant role during World War II. Unlike typical fighter aircraft of the time the Defiant was a turret fighter equipped with a dorsal turret housing four .303 inch Browning machine guns. Initially designed to counter unescorted bombers the Defiant proved vulnerable in daylight operations against more agile single-seat fighters. However its role evolved and it found a niche as a night fighter where its design became advantageous.No. 151 Squadron began transitioning to the Defiant NF in 1941 tasked with defending British skies during the Blitz. The Defiant NFs radar equipment allowed it to intercept and engage enemy bombers under the cover of darkness. These night operations were critical in countering the Luftwaffes nocturnal bombing raids on British cities and industrial targets.
