This elegant piece is based on a design by the London jeweller and goldsmith John Brogden (1820–84) for a gold pendant set with emeralds and diamonds dating from around 1870. The original design comes from an album which holds almost 1600 coloured designs for jewellery and goldsmith’s work. Brogden borrowed ornamental motifs from the past and adapted them to modern wares desirable to Victorian consumers. His jewels were a medley of motifs from historic architecture, sculpture and jewellery.
